United States. A professor at Eastern Michigan University partnered with the state-based company Plascore to help commercialize green protective coatings developed by his team of researchers at the academic headquarters.
Vijay Mannari, with a group of students from the University's Coatings Research Institute, focused their efforts on the development of polymers and coatings from renewable sources.
As a result of a seven-year work, there are six new inventions that are pending patents. The coatings developed are designed for protection of metal, wood, plastic and other building materials, and will be used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, transportation, packaging and construction.
Among the products developed are a chromate-free anticorrosive treatment for metals, as well as a UV curable coating made of soybean oil.
