United States. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said it has canceled two grant applications for research proposals for new sources for green chemistry.
The grants, which would be part of the Science to Achieve Results (Star) program, could provide $20 million to fund more than four years of research for the development of environmentally friendly chemicals and existing processes to replace hazardous materials.
In its announcement about the cancellations, the agency said applications are "subject to review and will be republished when the exam is complete."
The announcement surprised the researchers, who were at the presentation of the proposals for funding. In an article published in Environmental Health News, Evan Beach, a green chemist at Yale University, was quoted as saying that the funding was going to be "one of the most important sources of support dedicated to green chemistry, so it is a blow to the community that the call has been canceled without any explanation."
Indeed, EPA did not give any cause for the cancellation of the project. It is only known that they will further study the areas of research and their usual review process.
