International. A new review by delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and Croda contains an overview of the effect of the bio-based raw component on different coating properties.
The global rise in environmental awareness led to a rapid interest of the scientific community in the exploration of new materials based on biology. To date, several high-quality reviews have been published on the topic of bio-based polymers in general and coatings in particular. However, its main objective has been to inform about different raw organic materials used, specific fields of application or particular end products. Because of that approach, existing reviews almost completely fail to identify and analyze the potential uniqueness of biology-based raw materials to implement new or better functions in polymer coatings.
The current review offers an overview of the peculiar effect of the bio-based crude component on different coating properties, a feature the authors like to call "bio-touch."
The review highlights the relationship between the biological base element and the property achieved. The goal is not to inform all existing approaches and advances, but to critically analyze the main and most successful approaches that point to possible intrinsic weakness.
