International. A group of scientists from India developed an anticorrosive paint with improved toughness by using epoxy resin modified with terminal carboxyl.
Epoxy resins despite having excellent adhesion to various substrates, good corrosion and chemical resistance are less suitable for high-performance applications, as they are poor in ductility. In the present study, carboxyl-terminated adipiate polyethylene glycol (CTPA) modifiers and carboxyl-terminated polyethylene glycol suctioners (CTPS) were synthesized and then used to modify bisphenol A epoxy resin to increase the hardness of the latter.
The study showed that, in both cases, the addition of 5% by weight resulted in the highest hardness, as well as corrosion protection against salt spray and synthetic exposure to seawater. However, between the two modifications, the modified epoxy resin with 5% by weight of CTPS gave better performance and was therefore pigmented with a mixture of zinc phosphate and red iron oxide to obtain the paint.
The study showed that modified epoxy resin with 5% by weight of CTPS + 30% in volume of pigments resulted in the highest hardness (flexibility), adhesion and corrosion resistance when applied on mild steel panels.
