International. A recently published article by researchers from India deals with the synthesis of dianhydride curing agent for bio-based cardanol epoxy resins. The scientists also evaluated the performance properties of coatings cured with synthesized curing agent.
In a present research paper, a cardanol-based di-anhydride curing agent was synthesized and used in the preparation of anticorrosive epoxy coatings. To this end, cardanol and glycydil methacrylate were first reacted and subsequently extracted by using maleic anhydride to give the di-anhydride compound which was used as a curing agent for commercial epoxy resin.
The structure of the curing agent was confirmed by evaluating its acid and iodine value, as well as Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, proton-carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography techniques.
The coatings were formulated by varying the ratio of epoxy adduct to anhydride on a basis equivalent to 1:0.6, 1:0.8, 1:1. In addition, the prepared coatings were characterized by their mechanical, chemical, optical, thermal, insulating, anticorrosive, etc. properties and were compared with epoxy coatings cured with commercial methyltetrahydrothalic anhydrophide. It was observed that the cardanol-based curing agent performed well in all respects compared to the commercial curing agent.
