Pressure-sensitive adhesives market to exceed $16 billion by 2029

United States. According to a report by MarketsandMarkets, the global pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) market will grow to $16 billion by 2029, with a CAGR of 3.0%.

One of the major trends transforming the PSA market is the increasing demand for bioformula-based adhesives. Adhesives that are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are becoming a priority in various industries due to increasing environmental regulations and sustainability awareness. This has accelerated the research and development of eco-friendly alternatives, which is shaping the future of the sector.

In addition, the moderate threat of greener substitutes, such as water-based adhesives and biocompatible polymers, is leading to increased competitiveness within the market, which could bring significant changes in the coming years.

The PSA market is highly fragmented, with numerous players deploying production facilities of varying scale across the globe. However, despite this fragmentation, strong competition among established players acts as a barrier for new entrants, intensifying competitive rivalry within the sector. This dynamic environment is leading leading manufacturers to continuously innovate in products and processes to maintain their position in the global market.

Acrylic PSAs, which are in high demand for their durability and environmental resistance properties, fall into two main categories: water-based and solvent-based. These adhesives are highly versatile and are customized by adjusting specific monomers, allowing manufacturers to create bespoke products to meet various industrial applications. In addition, the growing preference for solvent-free and low-impact adhesives is driving the development of cleaner and more efficient production technologies.

The automotive sector is emerging as one of the main growth drivers for PSAs, especially in applications that require adhesives with advanced characteristics such as high adhesion, resistance to extreme temperatures, and long-term durability. According to data from the International Organization of Automobile Manufacturers (OICA), China, the United States, and Japan continue to be the largest producers of vehicles, fueling demand for PSA for use in automobile manufacturing. This trend is expected to continue to drive the adoption of acrylic PSAs in the coming years, aided by evolving environmental regulations and the growing demand for greener vehicles.

Water-based adhesives, which are increasingly popular for their environmental benefits, are developed by emulsifying adhesive components in water, followed by a drying process to form a solid adhesive layer. This type of technology is used in various chemical formulations, including acrylic, rubber, and vinyl adhesives, and stands out for its ecological advantages, such as limited biodegradability and fire retardant properties.

The adoption of these adhesives is gaining ground due to their low emissions and easy management in wastewater treatment processes, which favors their use in sectors that prioritize sustainability and efficiency in their production processes.

The combination of advances in adhesive technology, stricter environmental regulation, and growing demand for sustainable solutions is expected to continue to shape the PSA market in the coming years. With applications in sectors as diverse as automotive, electronics, construction, and the packaging industry, the global PSA market is well positioned to continue to grow steadily, reaching $16.0 billion by 2029.

This dynamism suggests that companies will need to focus on continuous innovation and adaptability to take advantage of the opportunities that arise in an increasingly competitive and ever-evolving market.
