PPG Launches Aerosol Insulating Coating for High-Temperature Environments

International. PPG introduces the new PPG PITT-THERM® 909, a solution to improve safety and efficiency in critical industrial sectors.

PPG PITT-THERM® 909 is a silicone-based aerosol insulating coating (SOI) designed to withstand extreme heat conditions in key industries such as oil and gas, chemical, petrochemical, and more.

This product offers greater thermal resistance and corrosion protection compared to traditional materials, raising the standards of safety and operational efficiency in high-demand environments.

Silicone technology that redefines heat limits

Unlike conventional coatings that cannot withstand temperatures above 350°F (177°C), PITT-THERM® 909 PPG is formulated to withstand up to 500°F (260°C), providing an ideal solution for equipment subjected to extreme heat. Tests have shown that the coating significantly reduces heat transfer, keeping external surfaces safe to the touch up to 310°F (154°C), minimizing the risk of burns and increasing occupational safety.

In addition, this innovative coating allows for more efficient application, as fewer layers are needed compared to traditional SOIs. With a thickness of up to 250 mils (6.35 mm) per layer, it can reach a total thickness of 500 mils in as little as one or two applications, reducing installation times and costs.

One of the biggest advantages of the PPG PITT-THERM® 909 is its ability to be applied on both hot and cold substrates, allowing operations to continue without the need for downtime, something that has traditionally been a challenge in these industrial environments.

"PPG PITT-THERM® 909 is a clear example of how we continue to innovate to solve the industry's most critical problems," said Bill Pernice, global head of the oil and gas segment at PPG. "With this coating, we offer a solution that not only improves heat resistance, but also optimizes safety and performance in extreme conditions."

In addition to its high thermal resistance, PPG PITT-THERM® 909 combats one of the main problems of traditional insulation systems: corrosion under insulation (CUI). This water-repellent coating has proven exceptional corrosion resistance in rigorous testing, making it an effective solution for reducing maintenance costs and avoiding costly operational downtime.
