International. Samsung filed a patent in February 2017 showing that it would be working on developing a "self-healing" oleophobic coating that would be applied over the glass that covers the back of many mobile devices. This patent application was published this month by the World Intellectual Property Organization and has therefore come to light.
In this patent, the coating is described as a "film" or "laminate" formed by compounds such as polyhedral silsesquioxane and polyrotaxane. It's important to note that oleophobic coatings for covering glass are not something new, as they have long been applied to phones to repel fingerprints.
Samsung's patent mentions a layer of "self-healing." We should not imagine a layer that makes the crystal recover magically, but it is possible that it protects the cover and makes the oleophobic layer last longer and consequently, the phone looks "like new" for a longer period.
It may also offer extra protection against scratches and abrasions, but it is not something that is mentioned in the patent itself or in the report.
