BNT NBR 16545: 2016, a new standard published by the Brazilian National Organization for Standardization (ABNT) entitled "High Thickness Coatings with Polyurea/Polyurethane Hybrid Systems – Performance Requirements" is a document that sets out the performance requirements of polyurea systems, and polyurethane/polyurethane hybrid systems manufactured, sold and applied in Brazil.
This standard specifies the method for determining the quality of two-component hybrid polyurea and polyurethane coatings, establishing the minimum performance requirements of two-component systems evaluated by laboratory tests.
The standard also provides field application requirements for polyurea systems and high-thickness polyurethane/hybrid polyurea systems applied over concrete and metal substrates using multi-component spraying equipment.
The standard also defines a high-thickness coating as a dry film thickness exceeding 500 microns (μm), as well as working prerequisites, surface preparation, pre-treatment, and safety equipment parameters and requirements.
"The approval of this standard by ABNT is a huge triumph to raise the bar for two-component polyurea systems and their application in Brazil. This standard will provide much-needed guidance for owners, suppliers and applicators of polyurea systems for all future applications," said Fernando Costa, Commercial Manager of VersaFlex in South America.
