Sun Chemical announced that it has strengthened its graphics and packaging markets with the opening of a new coatings laboratory at its research and development center located in Carlstadt, N.J.
The 11,000-square-foot investment has equipment and analytical support for the study of migration, adhesion, permeability, and other phenomena related to coating performance. SEM microscopy, atomic force microscopy, infrared surface mapping, sophisticated surface energy measurement and many other techniques are widely used to advance the fundamental understanding of key coating performance attributes.
A variety of equipment has been added to the new laboratory, including: gas transmission analyzers, test instruments in glass bottles, spraying equipment to develop new and improved coatings, inks and water primers, solvent, and energy curable. A laboratory laminator will be added in 2017 to help study the interaction between ink, substrate, primers, overprint varnishes and lamination adhesives.
The lab is the fourth of its kind worldwide, joining similar labs found in the UK and R&D centers at DIC in Japan.
