United States. Axalta Coating Systems, a global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, is pleased to announce that the color of the year 2016 for the automotive sector is Bright Blue.
Bright Blue is a medium blue tone that has depth and vividness with slight turquoise reflections. It is made with high chroma Vermeer™ technology, through a multi-layered process to achieve both an intense blue color and a unique brightness effect.
Axalta's color experts selected bright blue for a number of reasons. According to the 2015 popularity report, blue is increasing in popularity for a total of 8% of light vehicle sales in North America in 2015, due to the increase in the use of sport utility vehicles and compact utility vehicles.
From the global point of view, blue remained stable, while other rich colors decreased, and white, black and gray increased in popularity. The annual report, now in its 63rd consecutive year, highlights color options from cars around the world. The full report can be found here.
Historically, Axalta's color trend research shows that blue has been the top choice in North America. Blue was the number one color from 1957-1959 (blues in pastel shades) and was the leader in 1988 (darker blues with green shade). Recently, industry professionals expressed an interest in color during automotive events across the country, including the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas.
