Mexico. Due to the irregular use of hazardous waste, the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) temporarily closed a company of chrome coatings and machining of metal parts.
During the inspection of the company located in Zacatelco, Tlaxcala, the agency found that the firm is not registered with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) as a generator of hazardous waste. It also mixes this material with non-hazardous waste; it lacks a log log, and keeps them in areas that without the infrastructure and security conditions for environmentally safe storage, does not identify the containers of hazardous waste, among others.
In response, grinding and chrome plating sludge, spent lubricating oil, spent chromium solutions, metal containers of 50 kilograms capacity containing chromium trioxide, fiberglass, plastic film and flannels contaminated with chromium residues were seized, in an estimated total volume of three cubic meters.
Profepa explained in a statement that the assurance was carried out with the purpose of the company carrying out its management through companies authorized by Semarnat. Likewise, it initiated an administrative procedure against the company and imposed as a security measure the Temporary Partial Closure based on Article 170, First Fraction of the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection, for contravening the provisions of the General Law for the Prevention and Integral Management of Waste.
