Since 2014, Latin American countries have seen the dollar strengthen against different local currencies. The phenomenon, which occurs to a greater or lesser extent depending on the country, has mainly affected Brazil, which only so far in 2015 faces an increase in the dollar that exceeds 20%, in Colombia it is 8%, in Mexico 6% and in Chile 5%, to mention just a few cases.
The strengthening of the dollar has been felt in the economy of the countries of the region and the impact on the coatings industry is an issue that is beginning to worry. Taking into account that part of the raw materials for formulation of paints and coatings are imported, manufacturers and distributors will have to think of strategies that maintain the circulation of the products without affecting the final price.
The problem with this phenomenon is that it has occurred in a short time, which has perhaps not allowed paints and coatings companies to be prepared, although there have already been different cases with some raw materials whose prices suffer high and low trends throughout the year.
According to economic analysts, the volatility of the dollar will not change in the coming months. The big question for importers is what to do? With a high dollar and steady growth, it will be difficult for businesses to compete on prices.
Therefore, the invitation is to look for strategies that allow distributors and integrators in our sector to overcome this economic phenomenon, for example, by providing quality services with added value.
