International. The ASTM Corrosion Committee has approved the new Guide for the Determination of Crude Corrosion - ASTM G205, which offers some techniques to control this chemical reaction.
The standard establishes the methodologies for the evaluation of crude oils under conditions that normally occur in oil and gas production, as well as in storage and pipeline transportation. Crude oil is not normally corrosive under pipeline transport conditions, however, when water is present in the liquid state, the pipelines are vulnerable to corrosion, resulting in part from the ingredients of the partition crude oil in the water.
The ASTM G205 guide describes methods for determining corrosion of crude oils by a combination of three properties:
1- The emulation of oil and water
2- The wetting capacity of the pipe surface
3- Corrosion of the water phase in the presence of crude oil. Based on the results, the standard classifies crude oils into corrosive, neutral, inhibitory and preventive hydrocarbons.
