Spain. Since last March, the Institute of Biotechnology of León (Inbiotec) has been working with a group of nine European partners on a project called Biocorin, which seeks to develop new bio-coatings to inhibit corrosion on metal surfaces.
This research, which seeks to offer sustainable alternatives and will last until 2015, could generate savings of 600,000 million euros per year in investment for maintenance of this type of infrastructure.
According to Rafael Balaña, Scientific Director of Inbiotec, globally corrosion generates an expense of about 1,320 million euros per year, that is, 3% and 4% of the GDP of industrialized countries.
Through the integration of microorganisms in a coating, researchers seek to create applications with better performance for marine and terrestrial projects such as wastewater, pipelines, airports, railways, among others.
