International. Oil giant British Petroleum (BP) announced plans to create an international research center that focuses on advanced materials, which include smart coatings, alloys and metal compounds, among others.
The $100 million project is known as BP's International Center for Advanced Materials (BP – Icam) and will lead research focused on advancing the fundamental understanding and use of materials across a variety of energy and industrial applications.
BP-Icam will conduct research in seven main ranges: structural materials, smart coatings, functional materials, catalysis, membranes, energy storage and harnessing.
Smart coatings will be designed to generate greater protection against the elements and improve the life of a structure, protect pipes and platforms from corrosion.
