United States. Bio Tork, a Florida-based biotechnology company, announced its collaboration with Basf to optimize some microbial varieties for the industrial production of chemicals such as polymers and green products.
Basf and BioTork concluded that a combination of complementary approaches that reinforce development can improve the efficiency and economic outcomes of biochemical production processes. Notably, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
According to Bio Tork, the challenge facing chemical companies is pushing these microorganisms to produce chemicals faster, in much larger quantities and in industrial conditions different from a natural environment of microorganisms. This is the only way to use microorganisms for the commercially viable production of chemicals.
For that reason, Basf is using metabolic engineering techniques to make specific modifications to certain microorganisms, in order to optimize the capacity for bioconversion, increase performance and eliminate bottlenecks.
