United States. A new class of durable, environmentally friendly blue pigment was discovered at Oregon State University (OSU). Unusual features have also been found in heat reflection. It is a "cool blue" compound that could become something important within the new approaches to energy saving in buildings.
The compound, which has already received patent approval, was discovered about three years ago, they say by chance, as OSU scientists were conducting the study of some materials for their electrical properties.
Its potential use is to help reduce heat absorption in the roofs and walls of buildings (an evolving field of considerable interest in warm regions where cooling is expensive) and is now being considered for various commercial applications.
"The pigment has an infrared heat reflectivity of 40%, which is significantly higher than other blue pigments currently used," said Mas Subramanian, a chemistry professor at the university who discovered the compound.
