International. A new nanotechnology application for coatings was developed to enable the water solubility of quantum dots, making it possible to use these nanoparticles in biomedical equipment applications.
The research that allowed this breakthrough was developed by the Institute of Nanotechnology of the University of Twente and the agency A*STAR, which saw in the light emitted by the quantum dots, more intense and longer lasting than that of the fluorescent products currently used, an opportunity to improve the diagnostic process used in the medical field.
This is due to the fact that factors such as the insolubility in water and the toxicity of quantum dots make the coating an indispensable element to achieve an advantage of the properties of these particles.
In addition, when using the coating the points can emit visible light when exposed to UV radiation, for example, in addition to the hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of the coating it is possible to add sensitivity to certain substances to allow them to adhere to specific types of cells.
It is expected that in the medium term this coating can be used in various applications around the world, in addition to once again highlighting the importance in terms of the benefits that the application of coatings offers to different fields and industries.
