Brazil. With an investment of US$682.5 million (about 500 million euros), Basf will begin construction of a plant that will produce acrylic acid, butyl acrylates and superabsorbent polymers (SAP) in Camaçari, in the state of Bahia, the company said in a statement.
The plant, whose construction began in the last quarter of 2011 to begin operations in 2014, is the first to manufacture this type of materials in Latin America and constitutes the highest investment that BASF has made in the region since it entered the market nearly a century ago.
Additionally, Basf announced that in 2015 it will begin producing 2-ethyl-hexyl-acrylate, an important input used in the manufacture of high-performance industrial adhesives and coatings, at the plant it already operates in the town of Guaratinguetá, state of São Paulo.
With these investments, Basf takes advantage of several industrial segments such as tissue, acrylics for paints, textiles and adhesives for the civil construction sector, since local production avoids the cost overruns that are generated by the tax burdens that import entails.
