United States. The University of Rochester announced the opening of the Integrated Nanosystem Center (URnano) that will specialize in nanotechnology applications, including the development of paints and coatings.
The center will bring together experts in physics, optics, chemistry, biomedicine and bioengineering, who will work on the development and commercialization of new technologies for fuels, biosensors, paints and other aspects important to medicine, economics and safety.
According to the university, the center will have an area of 1,000 square meters for measurement and metrology, and an additional 2,000 feet for experimentation in a "clean room," designed with the latest technology and equipped with systems that make it virtually free of dust, foreign elements or chemical vapors.
This space is expected to develop and validate nanoparticle-related developments more quickly, said Nicholas Bigelow, professor of physics and director of URnano: "The URnano will complement nanotechnology research at other New York State universities, such as Albany, Cornell and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute."
