Germany. With an investment of US$198 million, AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals adopts electrolysis membrane technology at its chlorine plant in Frankfurt, which will allow the company to increase its production capacity by 50% each year.
The plant, which will come into operation in the fourth quarter of 2013, will reach an annual production of 250 kilotons and will improve the ecological footprint per ton of product by 30%.
For Knut Schwalenberg, Managing Director for AkzoNobel's chlor-alkali and chloromethane production operations in Frankfurt, "the most modern conversion of membrane technology fits perfectly with our sustainability agenda and our highly effective carbon policy, while strengthening our business with the expansion of chloromethane and significantly increasing capacity in the chlor-alkali market."
Rob Frohn, member of the company's Executive Committee and responsible for specialty chemicals, said: "This significant investment will enable us to meet robust customer demand in the region and is fully aligned with AkzoNobel's ambitions to continue investing in leadership positions in our traditional markets."
