In response to industry demand for transparent high-barrier films of aluminum oxide to be better protected during the conversion process, vacuum metallization machinery supplier Bobst and coatings supplier Michelman have developed a solution by combining finishing layers with aluminum oxide (AlOx) coatings to prevent loss of barrier performance during conversion processes such as printing and lamination.
Two final layer formulations have been developed by Michelman: Michem Flex B5770 and Michem Flex B5780; one is a top layer that gives protection to the AlOx layer during conversion, the second is a top layer of barrier enhancement which in addition to having all the benefits of a final layer of protection also provides additional barrier functionality improvements in both the Oxygen Transmission Rate (VTO) and the Water Vapor Transmission Rate (VTVA) to prolong the life of the contained shelf. of the packaging.
This solution results from the combination of Michelman's experience in the field of coating development with BOBST's conversion machinery in the fields of vacuum metallization, coating lines, lamination and both gravure and flexography.
