Peru/Argentina. Recently, scientists from the Institute of Corrosion and Protection, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and the Center for Research and Development in Paint Technology (Cidepint) published a study of zinc tannins prepared with Tara powder (Caesalpinia spinosa) as anticorrosive pigments in alkyd paints and formulations of washing primers.
The objective was to evaluate the anticorrosive properties of washed alkyd and primary paints formulated with zinc tannins containing Tara tannins. Its inhibitory efficacy was compared with pigmented paints with well-known anticorrosive pigments by accelerated corrosion tests (salt spray test, prohesion test and sulfur dioxide test), natural exposure tests and some electrochemical techniques (corrosion potential, polarization resistance and impedance measurements).
The ability to inhibit corrosion of zinc tannins was shown to be equivalent to that shown by most commercially available conventional pigments, such as zinc phosphate and zinc chromate.
