International. Originally developed to protect exterior structures in the harsh marine environment in North Sea oil and gas applications, a glass flake epoxy resin system from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings EMEA was chosen to protect blackfriars railway bridge and London station.
The three-layer preventive maintenance product provides good adhesion and anti-corrosion properties, and acts as a barrier against adverse weather conditions. The company indicated that the benefits of using this system come in terms of labor-saving costs, lower energy use and necessary paint volumes. In addition, the high-volume solids coating system meant that less VOC was emitted during the process.
The existing paint on the railway bridge was removed by abrasive jet cleaning. In total, more than 60,000 square meters of new and old iron and steel were coated.
