Latin America. The company will invest $11 million in an expansion project that it expects to be completed by mid-2023 and allow the plant to meet the expected future demand for powder coatings in the Latin American country.
PPG announces that it will invest $11 million to double the production capacity of its powder coatings plant in San Juan del Rio, Mexico.
In a statement, the company notes that powder coatings are a sustainable product offering with low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, increased durability, high transfer efficiency, and the ability to be recovered or reused during application.
In it, he highlights that they are an important part of the company's commitment to achieve 40% of sales of products and processes that have improved sustainability by 2025.
"With this investment, the plant will have new and state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, which will improve production practices and process flow," said Guillermo Peña, director of Industrial Coatings at PPG Mexico.
Peña stressed that "it will further improve the productivity of the plant and benefit our customers with better service levels and a faster response."
The project will involve the installation of new production lines, upgrades of existing equipment and increased application capabilities. The increase in production will also allow PPG to locally manufacture new and innovative powder coating products currently supplied from the U.S., including the following:
-ENVIROCRON High Transfer Efficiency (HTE) powder coatings for complex and difficult to coat surfaces.
-ENVIROCRON Extreme Protection Edge powder coatings to improve the corrosion performance of the edges in a single layer.
-ENVIROCRON HeatSense low temperature curing powder coatings for wood and metal based substrates.
-POWDER coating CORAFLON Platinum for architectural aluminum extrusions.
The expansion plan for PPG's powder plant in San Juan del Rio, which meets key quality certification IATF-16949, is the latest in a series of actions underscoring PPG's commitment to invest in further powder coating growth.
"This expansion reaffirms PPG's confidence in Mexico and the strategic role of the San Juan del Rio site for the powder coatings business," said Kevin Braun, PPG's vice president of global industrial coatings.
"Powder coating technology is becoming a more functional and cost-effective option for many customers due to its superior protection, sustainable qualities and higher transfer efficiency compared to liquid coating technology," Braun said.
