Latin America. The National Association of Paint and Ink Manufacturers (Anafapyt) has promoted a campaign to make traffic paint out of intentionally added lead.
From the Mexican association, which is formed by 85 suppliers and 75 manufacturers of paints, inks and coatings that encompass more than 80% of the national production, they have expressed a position in favor of the care of human health and the environment.
Hence, they have opened their contact channels to collect different opinions and develop a proposal for the modification of the Official Mexican Standard NOM-004-SSA1-2014 on environmental health, limitations and sanitary specifications for the use of lead.
This regulation seeks to establish the limitations and sanitary specifications to which the use of products containing lead, whether domestic or imported, must be subject in order to prevent harmful effects on health, including paints, pigments, enamels, coatings, emulsions and inks for different applications.
It states that exposure to lead compounds in any of their forms constitutes a health risk whether ingested in food, water, dust or soil contaminated with that element, or breathed, through dust or vapors emitted by industries, smelters, refineries, motor vehicles, etc.
"Lead can affect almost all organs and systems of the body, causing several unwanted effects, such as: disturbance of hemoglobin biosynthesis and anemia; increased blood pressure; damage to the kidneys; miscarriage; disturbance of the nervous system; damage to the brain; different types of cancer; decreased fertility," the rule states.
The association invites you to receive doubts, comments, proposals and technical justification for modifying the [email protected] and [email protected] emails, in addition to participating with the labels #PorUnMéxicoConMejoresNormas and #PorUnaMejorIndustria
