Germany. Coatino is the first voice-controlled digital lab assistant, capable of answering highly complex questions, developed by Evonik specifically for the coatings industry and expected to reach the brand's customers by 2020.
For paint manufacturers, the search for the right additive can be a marathon: "There are literally thousands of possible combinations, and practical testing is still the method of choice for paint experts," explains Oliver Kröhl, Head of Strategic Business Development at Coating Additives and responsible for the Coatino project.
As a digital helper, this application would put an end to this time-consuming and frustrating process: just ask Coatino what properties the desired additive should have and the system will respond with clear and reasoned recommendations.
To do this, the digital assistant accesses a database in the cloud that is continuously updated. In addition to many other sources, test results are also stored in the system library. "We use modern methods in the area of Big Data Science and Machine Learning to make sure coatino always suggests the most suitable additive," says Kröhl, thus replacing trial and error practice.
Gaetano Blanda, head of Evonik's Coating Additives Business Unit, said: "With our digital lab assistant we will help the coatings industry meet customer needs faster, more individually and more comprehensively".
