Brazil. Hexion Inc. presented at Abrafati its newly developed NextGen EpoxyTM Waterborne system, which offers coating performance comparable to solvent-based systems, complying with the rigorous regulations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The key to the new system is a water-soluble amine curing agent, called the Epikuretm 8530-W-75 curing agent. This solvent-free curing agent has a lower equivalent weight, meaning formulators can use less to cure the same amount of epoxy resin.
This curing agent, when combined with EPI-Reztm 7520-WD-52 resin, provides lower VOC, faster drying and good hardness development. This NextGen EpoxyTM WB system can be used to formulate ultra-low VOC coatings (on concrete and metal with a content of less than 100 g / LVOC).
"Our NextGen EpoxyTM Waterborne system offers a unique proprietary solution without the premium price associated with high-performance epoxides," said Ann Frederix, Senior Vice President, Epoxy Specialties. "To meet the demands of increasingly stringent VOC standards, our epoxy resin technology continues to evolve to meet new and more demanding applications. Through a balance between performance and price, our ultra-low water VOC epoxy systems provide a unique solution, such as improved product stability, superior freeze-thaw stability and extended service life, to a wider range of coating customers.
Recommended applications for Hexion's NextGen EpoxyTM water transportation system include: concrete floor and wall coverings; industrial maintenance coatings for metal; agricultural and construction equipment coatings; railway liners; and coatings for metal automotive parts and accessories.
