AkzoNobel and the agro-industrial cooperative Royal Cosun have formed a new partnership to develop new cellulose sidestream products resulting from the sugar beet process.
The company will combine Royal Cosun's specialist knowledge in the separation and purification of agricultural sidestream processes with AkzoNobel's expertise in the chemical modification of cellulose.
"This is an exciting collaboration with a wealth of possibilities," said Geert Hofman, general manager of performance additives in ethylene and sulfur derivatives at AkzoNobel. "It has the potential to offer a wide range of innovative cellulose-based products resulting from the transformation of sugar beet, addressing the need for more sustainable raw materials from a variety of industries, such as food and health, as well as coating and construction sectors."
Peter Nieuwenhuizen, R&D&I Director at AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, commented: "Putting agricultural side currents for use as a sustainable source of chemicals is clearly a big step forward. Working together with Royal Cosun, we aim to develop and market sustainable cellulose-based products, which will serve as essential ingredients for our customers' applications."
