The Dow Chemical Company won the prestigious American Coatings Award for sharing one of the most outstanding technical presentations at the 2016 American Coatings Conference.
The award-winning whitepaper details the development of new alkyd chemistry offerings to help solve the challenge of developing environmentally friendly alkyd base paints and coatings that can resist corrosion, adhere well and remain shiny.
Erin Vogel, Ph.D., a research scientist for industrial coatings at Dow Coating Materials, a dow business unit, accepted the award from the American Coatings Association (ACA) and partner Vincentz Network during the plenary session.
Market trends have favored solvent-based alkyds, particularly for use in industrial coatings, due to properties such as rapid development of hardness, high gloss, excellent adhesion and general corrosion protection. Despite these performance advantages, solvent-based coatings contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that enter the air as dry coatings. In contrast, water-based alkyd coatings have low or zero VOC capabilities, but developing well-behaved water-based alkyd chemicals has been a challenge, because traditional alkyds do not mix with water.
