International. Axalta Coating Systems published the 2015 Global Automotive Industry Color Popularity Report, which it has shared since 1953. Axalta's popularity data has been an important tool in collaboration with vehicle manufacturers to forecast the designs and color preferences that will appeal to customers in the coming years, according to Nancy Lockhart, Color Marketing Manager for Axalta in North America.
"For the fifth year in a row, white is the most popular color in the world. However, you see some differences in color preferences when looking at all regions. Red rises to ten percent in the South American market, medium-tone blues are important in Europe and bright blues have gained popularity in North America," Lockhart added.
Some highlights of the report include:
World Colors
The silver color stabilized after having declined for four years and remains at 13 percent.
Blue remains with respect to 2014, while other intense colors decrease.
North America
At 11 percent, North America shows that no other region likes the color red more. In the Axalta report, Radiant Red reflects this preference while blue increases in popularity to a total of eight percent of sales.
South America
White is the most popular color in the region; there is no color in any other region that is more requested. On the other hand, the silver color is the second most popular.
Europe
The continent shows the most preferences for blue, with nine percent and with a lot of interest in medium-tone sports blues. Black holds 21 percent of the market, stating that no other region likes this color more. It is worth mentioning that the bright black tones of luxury for intermediate and large cars are of interest.
Asia
In China alone, white gains in popularity with 19 percentage points.
According to Lockhart, the auto industry's color popularity provides a valuable aspect when you look at how the consumption of color preferences changes over time. "The next generation of colors in the global automotive industry will offer a variety of colors with highly chromatic bright reds, intense blues and vibrant violets. Niche colors are planned for small cars in unique shades of light blue, green and gold. Warm tones are gaining popularity in earth tones of green, bronze, red and beige. Finally, the cool tones keep the interest in white, gray and black," concluded Lockhar.
