International. Dow Coating Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, unveiled the new Rhoplex 800h acrylic binder, which is presented as a solution for formulators looking to improve hardness in architectural paints.
The new product was created by the company to enable the early hardness development of low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, the controlled polymer morphology technology employs hard, soft, functional monomers in a single water-based acrylic binder to help improve hardness and block strength in high-gloss, deep-tone architectural paints.
The course towards low and zero-VOC coatings offers continuous opportunities for innovation, and as consumers they are looking for brighter and more vivid colors for their homes, so we face solving the challenge of the low VOC hardness profile," said Fallyn Flaherty-Earp, architecture marketing manager at Dow Coating Materials. "Hardness and blocking resistance are difficult to achieve in low-VOC formulations, particularly in high-gloss, deep-tone paints with low pigment volume concentration (PVC)."
To overcome these challenges, approaches to the development of the new binder technology focused on investigating the subsequent formation of chemical cross-linked film and the optimization of the morphology of latex particles.
