Latin America. The 26-6 edition of Zona de Pinturas, the last of 2023, is now online. In this article, we explore some toxic compounds that are part of the formulation of paints, such as organic solvents and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
"Solvents, as they are often volatile organic compounds, should be considered for use, which is being reduced in the industry to migrate to technologies that are more environmentally friendly," says Oliver Peña, technical service representative for Coatings and Adhesives (Additives and Resins) at First Quality Chemicals, in the main article.
There we include the voice of Marina Estevez Gallardo, Technical Business Development Manager for Latin America at Aditya Birla Group, who proposes three ways to reduce organic solvent emissions: incorporate high solids systems, replace organic solvents with water, and use solvent-free systems such as powder coatings or with UV curing.
Next, Cristian Balderrabano, also from First Quality Chemicals, presents a series of alternatives: Both RC grades and the MaxWax line are alternatives to the constant regulatory issue of PTFE, such as RC grades and the MaxWax line.
Later, in the pages of Surface Protection and Corrosion Control, Juan Manuel Álvarez develops those technical standards that can be consulted today for the purpose of using as a guide for the determination of specifications of a project, work or tender.
Next, Jaime Baldeon explores some technological innovations in the field of coatings and how they are changing the way we face the challenge of corrosion.
Next, the engineer Abel De la Cruz Pérez highlights the work of the specialist in the appraisal of coating failures, since recognizing the type of paint failure along with the understanding of its root causes, the physical-chemical mechanism by which it occurs and how to remedy it can lead to an early correction.
Likewise, as a special collaboration for this edition, Andrea Ochoa provides an economic forecast of the paint market at the end of 2023. It highlights that the momentum of its growth over the next few years will be marked by the rapid development of industries and the construction of infrastructures in the region.
Finally, as Professional of the Month, we interviewed the manager of Sui Color, Guillermo Ortega, directly in one of the three headquarters of the network in Buenos Aires, where we witnessed the celebration of the 20th anniversary of this painting shop in permanent expansion.
