Evonik is known for using renewable acetone in isophorone-based products

United States. Evonik's crosslinker plant in Mobile, Alabama, receives the ISCC Plus sustainability certificate for its use of renewable acetone in the production of isophorone-based products.

The site's accreditation in Mobile allows Evonik to produce and market its renewable isophorone-based Vesta eCO series in the U.S. for the first time.

The use of acetone made from renewable biocircular materials derived from industrial waste, such as used cooking oils, integrated with existing raw materials, allows Evonik to provide the only renewable isophorone platform of isophorone, diamine and diisocyanate products on the market.

By reducing its reliance on fossil-based acetone, Evonik is reducing the carbon footprint of its own production, while supporting customers in the region to address their own demands for sustainability, CO2 reduction and environmental regulation.

To achieve ISCC PLUS certification, Evonik's use of renewable raw materials is independently certified using the principle of mass balance accounting and external audit. The process combines the inputs with the results of the production process by calculating and determining the proportion of renewable raw material when renewable and fossil raw materials are used.

For example, the VESTANAT IPDI eCO product contains 75% renewable carbon per mass balance, offering a significant reduction in global warming potential (GWP) and CO2 footprint compared to its fossil-based counterparts.

"This latest ISCC accreditation allows us to adopt large-scale production of our VESTA eCO series products on mobile devices and provide our customers in the region with cost-effective and sustainable solutions," said Christian Schmidt, Head of the Evonik Crosslinkers business line.

"Providing our customers with reliable carbon footprint information to give them a clear picture of their reduction options is another step in our sustainability journey to achieve climate neutrality in the industries we support," Schmidt added.

"From renewable raw materials and our production to consumers purchasing ISCC PLUS certified products, we can track every renewable molecule we use throughout the supply chain," said John Duggan, director of Evonik Crosslinkers' Americas line of business.

"So, even when we mix the different raw materials, we can reduce our overall carbon footprint and the ultimate goal is to use 100% renewable raw materials to further reduce the carbon footprint," Duggan added.
