International. According to a study by the consulting firm Kusumgar, Nerlfi, & Growney, global coatings consumption in 2012 is projected at about 67 billion pounds, or about $120 billion.
Volume has recovered from the recession of 2009, with the Asia-Pacific region leading the way in this segment. However, the study indicates that growth slowed in 2012 due to global and local economic uncertainties.
The volume of coatings this year is up 15% since the 2009 recession, but their value is around a third, largely due to escalating commodity prices.
The South and Central American regions contribute 8% of the world's demand for coatings, and that figure is expected to increase in the future. Europe is the second region on the consumption scale with 27%. Asia leads the market with 42%.
