United States. PPG Industries' aerospace coatings group created a custom coloured paint for the application of a golden pigeon logo used on nine British Airways Airbus A319s for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
PPG specialists reported working with artist Pascal Anson to supply the fleet with Desothane(R) HS/CA 8000 series coatings in gold, light grey and white. A two-stage gold mica created the feather lines, which were accented in white and painted on a light gray fuselage representing the pigeon's body and wings.
The system also allows the repainting process to be simplified, as the top layer and middle layer are designed to be easily removed, and the primary color is left intact. The plane is washed, and the middle layer and top layer are reapplied. The system typically saves about a day to repainte these types of aircraft.
