Germany. The multinational chemical company Evonik reported that it has significantly improved its environmental efficiency, according to the 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report which indicates that it has decreased its specific emissions related to energy and greenhouse gases by 17% in the period from 2004 to 2011.
During the same period, the production of specific waste was reduced by 18% and water consumption by 27%. "Responsible behavior and financial success cannot be separated from each other. They need each other. The possibility of accepting economic, ecological and social responsibility is a matter of attitude," said Klaus Engel, Chairman of evonik's executive board.
The company aims to reach 20% in the reduction of these pollutants by 2014. For this purpose, the company has implemented a large number of measures that improve efficiency. Thus, at its largest headquarters, which is in Marl, Germany, the company reduced the energy needs for its own cold water supply from a power plant, optimized a turbocharger for cooling, and used more efficient pumps in the new cooling plants.
