International. The Centro de Investigación of mobile phone manufacturer Nokia developed a new waterproof and superhydrophobic coating for this type of device. Such a coating is based on the properties of the lotus flower.
The goal of the Nokia researchers is to replicate the water-repellent properties of the lotus flower with nanotechnology and apply it to the outside of cell phones. Chris Bower, the Center's senior scientist, said, "Like many scientists we're trying to copy what nature has been doing perfectly for thousands of years."
To better visualize their findings, the research team conducted a demonstration with a Nokia Lumia 710 that was treated with the coating. In this, the water bounces off the surface and then rolls to a thin layer of graphene that has also been treated with the superhydrophobic coating.
Thanks to this development, the resistance to water, fingerprints and anti-reflection properties of the device is expected to improve significantly. According to Nokia scientists, this research has them very close to perfecting a coating for the exterior with the aforementioned characteristics, for now the development has only been applied in the internal components of the device.
