United States. The company Nanothech announced that it is already commercializing in the United States a coating for application in nuclear power plants based on nanotechnology. The thermal insulation substance protects against corrosion and moisture, is uv resistant and has lead encapsulation, one of the biggest problems in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities.
Francesa Crolley, vice president of business development at Nanotech, says that while some countries are dismantling nuclear plants, others plan to build to meet the energy need of the population, "our technology gives us the opportunity to offer added value in both cases."
Thermal insulation coating is used to insulate equipment to reduce heat loss and increase the energy efficiency of existing nuclear facilities, and has the ability to easily encapsulate lead-contaminated surfaces for environmental remediation.
"We have already started initial projects in the U.S. with plants using our nanotechnology-based products. Power generation facilities including nuclear, coal, oil, gas, wind and solar will continue to be a market focus this year to expand the footprint of sustainable nanotechnology and the benefits it can offer for efficient power generation," concluded Vice President Crolley.
Of the approximately 439 nuclear power plants currently operating in 30 countries, the United States, France and Japan operate about half.
