International. Nissan Europe said it has begun technology testing with a paint that repels mud, rain and dirt on a daily basis, allowing drivers not to clean their new car.
Super hydrophobic paint and phobic oil that repels water and oils has been applied to the new Nissan Note of the European market, to create the world's first self-cleaning car.
To assess the actual efficacy of the super-hydrophobic coating as a potential aftermarket application, engineers at Nissan Technical Center Europe will be testing the self-cleaning Note in the coming months in a variety of conditions.
Nissan is the first automaker to apply the technology called Ultra-Ever Dry ® to the car body. By creating a protective layer of air between the paint and the environment, it effectively stops standing water and road splashes.
So far, the coating, which is being marketed and sold by UltraTech International Inc., has responded well to common use cases, including rain, dew, frost, sleet and standing water. Although there are no plans to apply the technology in other conventional models, Nissan will continue to consider it as a future replacement option.
