International. Paints and coatings have been considered as effective materials for overcoming air impurities in megacities. In research conducted at the University of Science and Technology of Iran, the influence of inorganic binder on photocatalytic oxidation and degradation of acrylic compounds containing nano/micro TiO2 was studied.
Soluble glass (Na2SiO3), as an inorganic binder, was added to acrylic latex at 5 and 10% by weight.
Effects on particle dispersion, photocatalytic oxidation rate (PCO), mechanical properties of films, degradation of films under UV irradiation and PCO activity were evaluated.
The results showed that the use of 5% by weight of soluble glass greatly improved the degradation of acrylic-based samples. Discoloration also decreased. It was found that soluble glass could improve the PCO activity of the samples. For example, it increased the PCO rate up to 87% for samples containing 5% by weight of Nano TiO2 along with 10 and 20% by weight of TiO2 pigments.
