International. A review by scientists from India and Norway emphasizes the effects of self-healing and anti-fouling coatings for corrosion inhibition of metallic materials. In addition, they discussed new coatings with anticorrosive characteristics that compensate for the restriction of the use of conventional formulations.
Smart coatings are innovative solutions that can react spontaneously, due to built-in mechanisms of response to stimuli. The functionality obtained from this class of coatings in the metal-solution interface in aggressive environments has led to advances in anti-corrosion studies and applications.
The presence of high-quality nanoparticles in coating formulations contributes to stronger and more reliable coatings. These have unleashed unprecedented functionalities in smart coatings. They respond to single/multiple external stimuli, such as light, dirt, pH changes, temperature, aggressive liquids, bio-foulant, impact, fatigue, and have demonstrated excellent barrier properties with scratch resistance, in situ scarring, superhydrophobicity, superoleophilia, high optical transmission, thermal stability and resistance to strong acids, resulting in a long service life of protected coatings and metal materials.
The use of smart coatings in complex conditions and in real time effectively controls the triggers of metal degradation, structural failures and resource depletion.
