With the support of the Jaume I University of Castellón, the Spanish company Macer carried out a project called "Development of new coatings and application technologies for the recovery and improvement of the useful life of molds for pressing ceramic pieces".
The main objective of this project is to develop new coatings of a metallic nature, metal / ceramic or other, as well as new techniques, which serve for the recovery and improvement of the performance, or performance in service, of molds and dies for ceramic pressing, which due to physical, chemical or mechanical deterioration have failed, their useful life has come to an end or is about to end.
The new coatings and technological processes to be developed should contribute to extending the remaining useful life of industrial moulds and dies, improving the value of these parts in terms of the reliability of their performance and the economic benefit of their recovery.
The extension of the useful life of a ceramic tile pressing mold, either through its recovery/repair as well as by increasing its resistance to abrasion wear of ceramic powder, has become a primary objective for the company, knowing the importance that this has for its customers.
The results that Macer is achieving in this project are included in the following lines:
- Development of coatings with an optimal balance of wear resistance and impact resistance for the application of pressing ceramic tiles, as well as study of the optimal process of contribution of said coatings, for the recovery of worn areas, and lengthening of the useful life of the mold components.
- Development of new mixed systems "Steel-tungsten carbides", as well as their optimal methods of joining and machining, to increase the useful life of blades and improve the quality of the pressed product.
This project has the financial support of IVACE within the program "R&D projects companies in collaboration with universities", being co-financed by ERDF funds within the framework of the ERDF Operational Program of the Valencian Community for the period 2014-2020.
