International. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) listed 38 of these as possible "substances of high concern" (SVHC). This list includes those that could be subject to prohibition or limitation in their use in the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical Substances of the European Union, legislation known as Reach.
The substances listed include various lead compounds or industrial chemicals, such as diethyl sulfate, solvents such as 1-bromopropane, and pesticides such as dinoseb. The full list can be seen by clicking here.
The substances were entered into a "register of intent" by SVHC status. According to information in BNA, the EU's executive arm - the European Union - could confirm the status of SVHC substances by the end of August. Those same reports indicate that it could open a public consultation on 3 September.
The addition of substances for the registration of intentions is a preliminary stage in the process of banning the most dangerous chemicals under the Reach regulation, and all 38 have been added to that register on the basis that they are "carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction".
