Paint manufacturer penalized by EPA

PenalizaciónUnited States. The value of the civil fine that the company Sumter Coatings Inc. (SCI) agreed to pay to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a series of violations in the handling of hazardous waste at its facilities in Sumter, South Carolina, amounts to $55,000.

In addition to the monetary fine. The manufacturer of paints and coatings for the steel and agricultural industry committed to developing a training program for staff, as well as establishing a schedule for it and a process to identify employees who require training.

Violations detected in the EPA inspection included improper handling of hazardous waste containers, failure to provide sufficient base under hazardous waste containers, failures to inspect all container storage areas weekly, and the absence of a training program.

Following the inspection, SCI implemented process changes to reduce the risk of release of containers with hazardous waste. Among the modifications made are the labeling of all containers with the necessary information, the reduction of the number of places where short-term storage occurs and changes in the size of the containers.
