Brazil. The Brazilian Association of Paint Manufacturers, Abrafati, presented a project that aims to reduce the import tariff for stabilized vinyl acetate from 12 to 2%. The Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of Artificial and Synthetic Fibers also participates in the project.Dilson Ferreira, CEO of Abrafati explained that "This (Vinyl Acetate) is a very important input for the paint industry, widely used in latex and must be imported because there is no local production. The tax is not justified, it unnecessarily raises the costs of manufacturers already pressured by the devaluation of the real."
Abrafati said in a statement that the project includes two stages. The first of these is the temporary reduction of this levy for a period of one year, by virtue of shortages. This process would have a short procedure, since it appeals to an emergency situation.
Subsequently, work would be done for the definitive dismantling of the tax, since in Mercosur the material has not been produced since March 2008, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Chemists, Abiquim.
