International. Perstorp has presented ambitious sustainability targets for greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3), as well as for water and waste, to be achieved by 2030.
The company has now supplemented those goals with roadmaps outlining the steps and actions needed to meet them and help customers reduce their carbon footprint, as well as guide Perstorp towards its long-term ambition to become finite neutral.
"As pioneers in the sustainable transformation of the chemical industry, we now have concrete and achievable plans and the necessary processes in place to continuously develop and execute to achieve our sustainability goals," said Ansa Berggren, Vice President Sustainability at Perstorp Group.
"This will create real progress and show that it is possible to achieve ambitious targets," he added.
The highest greenhouse gas emissions are in Scope 3, which includes the raw materials and end-of-life treatment of Perstorp's products.
The Scope 3 roadmap includes the steps needed to drive the transition of the product portfolio from fossil fuel-based alternatives to more sustainable alternatives with a lower carbon footprint.
According to the company, this in turn will help Perstorp customers achieve their own sustainable transition.
A key project in this roadmap is Project Air, an initiative that aims to replace all the fossil methanol Perstorp uses in Europe with methanol produced from waste streams such as carbon capture and utilization (CCU) and renewable sources such as biogas.
This alone is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 500,000 tons per year.
Linda Zellner, Head of Innovation, Fluid Engineering and Advanced Materials at Perstorp Group, said: "Achieving the Scope 3 goals is complex, but very important. We have several projects and activities on the roadmap that will replace fossil feedstock with renewable and recycled materials, and that will also support our customers in their sustainable transformation."
The corporate objectives of Scope 1 and 2 (direct greenhouse gas emissions from Perstorp production plants and purchased energy), as well as water and waste targets, have been broken down into local targets and roadmaps, firmly anchored in the specific prerequisites for each production plant.
