SBTi validates Sun Chemical's emission reduction targets

Planeta sostenible

International. The greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of Sun Chemical and its parent company, DIC Corporation, have been validated by the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative.

It considers them consistent with levels that climate science says are necessary to limit average global warming to well below two degrees Celsius, above pre-industrial levels.

"Being validated by SBTi is a great achievement, especially for an organization of the size and complexity of Sun Chemical and the entire DIC Group," said Mike Simoni, director of global sustainability at Sun Chemical.

"It shows the commitment of our entire organization to leading the industry's charge toward sustainability," he added.

Recognizing climate change as a critical societal imperative, Sun Chemical and the entire DIC Group aim to achieve carbon neutrality by working to reduce total Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 27.5%, taking 2019 as a baseline.

In addition, Sun Chemical and DIC Group are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 13.5% by 2030 by promoting the use of recycled feedstocks and biomass, helping customers improve recycling rates, decrease disposal of used products and improve material recycling efficiency using proprietary technologies.

The targets also include an acceleration of suppliers' sustainability commitment to 80 percent of procurement spending by 2027.

"Sun Chemical, as part of the DIC Group, has demonstrated our deep commitment to sustainability for many years, and achieving the endorsement of the Science Based Targets Initiative is an important next step in that journey," said Global Technical Director of Sustainability, Sun Chemical, Nikola Juhasz.

"Our plans include focusing on exciting product and service innovations to enable circularity and that will have cascading environmental benefits along our value chains," he said.

Nicolas Bétin, Sun Chemical's global sustainability business leader, said: "This endorsement from SBTi recognises our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and circularity, and will further support our customers' efforts to meet their own sustainability goals."

Since 2020, Sun Chemical's Corporate Sustainability Committee has met to further strengthen its approach to addressing the sustainability needs of the industries it serves.

DIC also has an established Climate Change Subcommittee that is responsible for discussing and debating responses to climate change-related problems, as well as considering climate change goals and initiatives.
