International. The turn now is for the Sherwin-Williams paint company that has highlighted as its 2019 Color of the Year the Cavern Clay (SW7701), an orange-and-warm dye. The shade is reminiscent of terracotta tiles and sandy tones of the American Southwest, the company said.
"Cavern Clay is an easy way to attract the warmth of the outdoors," says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing. "Imagine beaches, canyons and deserts, and summer afternoons bathed in the sun."
But it is also meant to transport those who choose to cover their walls with the trend color in time. "We think 2019 will be a renaissance of the 1970s, with a twist," Wadden says. "In the coming year, we will embrace our pioneering spirits and craftsmanship." He notes that the color "embodies renewal, simplicity, and the bohemian, free-spirited spirit," hallmarks of the funky, futuristic decade.
The sunset-inspired paint chip is on the opposite side of last year's Oceanside's color wheel, a lush blue-green and much bolder than the previous two years, which saw the name of the painting company Poised Taupe, also known as greige (2016) and Alabaster, a grayish color (2015).
Announcing the color of the year has become a popular annual tradition for paint companies following in the footsteps of international color forecasting company Pantone, which last year named Ultra Violet the color for 2018.
Many companies launch complete trend palettes. Cavern Clay is part of Sherwin-Williams' Wanderer Mix, which includes seven shades inspired by the landscape of the "New West".
